An Analysis of Politeness Strategies used by Non-Native Saudi English Speakers in Family Gatherings

In social interaction, people need to be polite and aware of others' self-image, feelings wants maintain build good relationships. For this goal, use various politeness strategies save the hearer's face when face-threatening acts are inevitable. This paper aims examine types used by six Saudi family members, three girls two boys, in their interactions based on Brown Levinson's theory (1987) find out most frequent them. The data were collected recording participants different occasions gatherings using a qualitative approach. Based analysis, there 33 utterances containing all four strategies. strategy was positive (33.33%) followed negative (30.30%), bald-on record (21.21%), off-record (15.15%). study could lead further research other conversational settings with regard effect power gender.
